‘Emergency’ Sees Slow Start Amid Controversy

Kangana Ranaut’s political drama ‘Emergency’ has managed to collect Rs 7.39 crore at the domestic box office in its first two days. Released on Friday after multiple delays, the film sheds light on the 21-month Emergency period from 1975 to 1977 with Ranaut portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The makers, Manikarnika Films, revealed that ‘Emergency’ earned Rs 3.11 crore on opening day and Rs 4.28 crore on Saturday. Despite the modest numbers, the production company remains optimistic, calling the buzz “unstoppable.”

However, controversies have cast a shadow on the movie’s release. Protests led by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organizations erupted across Punjab, alleging misrepresentation of the Sikh community. As a result, the film was not screened in cinemas across the state.

Demonstrations were held outside theaters by Sikh groups, with politicians also demanding a ban. Kangana Ranaut criticized the restricted screenings in Punjab, calling it “harassment of art and the artist.”

The movie also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, late actor Satish Kaushik, and others in important roles. It has been jointly produced by Zee Studios and Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films.

While the film has triggered controversies, its makers are hopeful that it will find its stride as word-of-mouth builds. Time will tell if ‘Emergency’ can overcome its slow start at the box office.
