PM Modi Honors Indian Cinema Legends on Their Centenary Year

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered four iconic Indian film legends during his final Mann Ki Baat address of 2024. Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), and Tapan Sinha were honored as their birth centenary years are celebrated this year.

Modi highlighted their significant role in elevating Indian cinema on the global stage. He referred to Raj Kapoor as a filmmaker who showcased India’s soft power through his classic films. Modi added that Kapoor’s legacy continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

On legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi, Modi said his voice was magical. He praised Rafi’s ability to bring alive a spectrum of emotions through songs of all genres—devotional, romantic, or melancholic. Even younger generations remain fans of Rafi’s melodies, a tribute to his timeless artistry.

The Prime Minister also lauded Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) for taking Telugu cinema to new heights. According to Modi, ANR’s films reflected Indian traditions and values, leaving a lasting impression on the industry.

Tapan Sinha’s contributions to Bengali cinema were also celebrated. Modi noted that Sinha’s work promoted social consciousness and messages of national unity. Sinha’s films remain a symbol of meaningful storytelling.

December marked the 100th birth anniversary of Kapoor and Rafi, with ANR’s centenary celebrated in September and Sinha’s in October. As India remembers these cultural beacons, their influence continues to inspire filmmakers and storytellers across generations.
