Kangana Ranaut has announced that her controversial film ‘Emergency’ will be available for streaming on Netflix from March 17. The movie, which narrates the political turmoil of the 1975 Emergency, faced several setbacks before its theatrical release on January 17.
Directed and produced by Ranaut, the film features her as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She shared the streaming update on Instagram with a still from the movie, alongside an old image of Gandhi.
‘Emergency’ ran into controversy over its censor certificate and allegations of misrepresenting the Sikh community. Following its release, the film was not screened in Punjab due to protests from Sikh organizations and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Despite calls for a ban, Ranaut defended her work, calling the backlash a harassment of art and artists. The film documents the 21 months of Emergency imposed by Gandhi, one of the most debated periods in Indian history.
The movie features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik. It was produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
With its arrival on Netflix, ‘Emergency’ is set to reach a wider audience, reigniting discussions on one of India’s most controversial political eras. Whether it finds acceptance or further opposition remains to be seen.
