Trump's Film Tariff Plan Faces Backlash From Filmmakers

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur slammed Donald Trump’s new movie tariff idea, warning it could actually hurt Hollywood. Trump wants a 100% tax on all foreign-made films entering the U.S.

Trump announced the move on Truth Social, saying it’s about protecting American movies. He claimed the U.S. film industry is dying and foreign nations are luring studios away.

Kapur, known for movies like ‘Mr. India’ and ‘Elizabeth,’ said this could backfire big time. He pointed out that over 75% of Hollywood’s earnings come from foreign audiences.

He also noted that major parts of film budgets are already spent outside the U.S. He warned this tariff might just push filmmakers to operate more overseas.

Another Indian director, Anurag Kashyap, shared Trump’s post on Instagram but didn’t say a word. It’s unclear where other film voices stand, but reactions are brewing.

Trump claims this is about national security and fighting propaganda. But for many in the industry, the bigger threat might be the tariff itself.
