Rukhsar Rehman Still in Love with the Stage

Rukhsar Rehman may be a familiar face from movies and web shows, but her heart belongs to theatre. She says theatre was her first love—and still is.

The actress has been active on screen in films like ‘PK’, ‘Uri’, and ‘83’, plus hit series like ‘The Night Manager’ and ‘Gone Game’. But no matter where her career goes, she always returns to live stage performances.

“I’ve been doing theatre for ten years now,” she said. Her first play was ‘Nirbhaya’, a powerful production she toured with for three years.

Just recently, she brought laughter to Lucknow with two comedy plays—‘Bade Miyan Deewane’ and ‘Phir Se Shaadi’. The response, she said, was fantastic with a big crowd of theatre lovers turning up.

For Rukhsar, it’s not about the money. It’s the thrill of performing live. “It’s almost like being in love,” she says about being on stage.

Her theatre inspiration? The musical ‘Mamma Mia’, which she watched live in London last year. “Everything was just perfect,” she said, calling herself a big fan of the songs, the film, and Meryl Streep.
