Renowned Bengali Director Arun Roy Passes Away at 56

Bengali cinema lost one of its finest storytellers as Arun Roy passed away on Thursday at a Kolkata hospital. The celebrated filmmaker was 56 and had been battling cancer for the past year and a half. He was admitted to RG Kar Hospital last month due to a lung infection, which worsened over the past few days, hospital sources confirmed.

Actor Dev, who starred in Roy’s latest project, ‘Bagha Jatin,’ shared a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter). “You have gone too soon, friend. You were a person with a 24-carat gold heart,” he wrote. Dev’s production house, Dev Entertainment Ventures, described Roy as a visionary director whose creativity and passion will be remembered forever.

Arun Roy made a powerful debut in 2011 with ‘Egaro – The Immortal XI,’ a film that won hearts and established his reputation as a thought-provoking filmmaker. Over the years, he gave audiences unforgettable films like ‘Cholai,’ ‘Hiralal,’ ‘8/12 Binay Badal Dinesh,’ and his most recent work, ‘Bagha Jatin.’ Each movie showcased his ability to delve into history and culture with authenticity and flair.

Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee also paid tribute, applauding Roy’s unique ability to make audiences think through his cinema. He said Roy’s films, though few, reflect his real victory as an artist. “He will remain a winner in our hearts,” Prosenjit remarked.

Fans and colleagues have poured out condolences, remembering Roy as a director with immense talent and a heart full of kindness. His contributions to Bengali cinema will leave a lasting impact.

Even in his short tenure as a filmmaker, Arun Roy managed to shine a bright light on stories that otherwise might have remained untold. He will be dearly missed, but his films will continue to inspire generations to come.
