Nicolas Cage had a wild ride while training for his new movie, ‘The Surfer’. While learning to surf, he nearly ran into a shark and got stuck in a dangerous rip tide.
The actor, known for diving deep into his roles, admitted this time it got a little too real. Despite some surfing experience, Cage said he was shaken after being tossed around by powerful waves.
“I could have died,” Cage told Variety. He described climbing up his surfboard leash while somersaulting in the water.
The close call made him pause and think about what really matters. Now that he’s a father, he’s not sure extreme surfing is worth it anymore.
Still, Cage hasn’t given up on the dream completely. He joked his ideal retirement is to “surf, drink red wine, and eat spaghetti.”
In ‘The Surfer’, Cage plays a man obsessed with reclaiming his past, facing bullies and his own mind. The film dives into themes of trauma and obsession—something the actor almost felt for real in the waves.
