Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has issued an apology over the controversy surrounding his latest movie ‘L2: Empuraan’. He has promised to remove the scenes that upset certain political and religious groups.
The backlash started after the film’s release last Thursday, with Sangh Parivar members slamming it for referencing the Gujarat riots and criticizing right-wing politics. In response, Mohanlal shared a ‘regret note’ on Facebook saying he never intended to promote hate.
He said the entire team shares the responsibility and has agreed to remove the problematic parts. Mohanlal noted his film career has always stood with the people, valuing their trust over all.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan supported the film and blamed the Sangh Parivar for creating a “climate of fear”. He said artists should have the freedom to challenge ideas and portray truths through cinema.
Opposition Leader V D Satheesan agreed, accusing right-wing groups of trying to rewrite history. He said threatening artists to change their work is a sign of cowardice, not strength.
But not everyone is happy. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the movie and declared he won’t watch it. He expressed disappointment over what he sees as historical distortion.
‘L2: Empuraan’ is the sequel to the hit film ‘Lucifer’. Despite the ongoing row, the movie opened strong with 4,500 shows across Kerala on day one.
