Karan Johar Backs His First Punjabi Film ‘Akaal’

Karan Johar is stepping into Punjabi cinema with ‘Akaal,’ marking Dharma Productions’ first Punjabi-language film. The movie is a tribute to his late father, Yash Johar, who had deep Punjabi roots.

The film is written and directed by Gippy Grewal, who also plays the lead role. The cast includes Nimrat Khaira, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Nikitin Dheer. Johar believes this collaboration is special and praises Grewal’s talent and humility.

The trailer launch happened on the birthdays of Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar, and Dharma CEO Apoorva Mehta. Johar shared how his father always wanted him to embrace Punjabi culture and speak the language.

Grewal revealed that he always dreamed of making this film but lacked financial support earlier. He expressed gratitude toward Johar for believing in ‘Akaal’ and helping bring the project to life.

Veteran Punjabi actor Ghuggi recalled the early days of Punjabi cinema and how its recognition has grown. He said getting a Dharma Productions film in Punjabi is an emotional moment for the industry.

Dheer and Khaira also shared their excitement about being part of the project. ‘Akaal’ is set to release in theaters on April 10, bringing a new collaboration between Bollywood and Punjabi cinema.
