Jodie Foster has watched ‘All We Imagine As Light’ not once, but twice. The Hollywood legend’s admiration for the movie is just another feather in the cap for filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose creation continues to make waves internationally. On Wednesday, Kapadia bagged the Best International Film award at the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC).
In her acceptance speech, Kapadia thanked her US distributor for helping her connect with Hollywood insiders. The film, which features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, delves into themes of love and loneliness through the lives of three women in Mumbai. These women include two Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu, along with their friend Parvati, a cook.
The film made history last year by becoming the first Indian movie to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Though it didn’t clinch any Golden Globes despite two nominations, the movie has been on a roll elsewhere, grabbing awards and nominations left and right.
Recently, the film snatched the Best International Film honor at the Gotham Awards and topped Sight and Sound magazine’s list of best films of the year. It’s already on the BAFTAs longlist and is expected to nab more nominations. Fans are crossing their fingers for it to represent India at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Kapadia’s film hit Indian theaters on November 22 and has been earning rave reviews ever since. While it wasn’t India’s official Oscars pick this year, its growing global recognition keeps hope alive. With Jodie Foster’s endorsement and its impressive winning streak, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ is becoming a must-watch for cinephiles worldwide.
