Police in Paris have finally found the long-lost bust of Jim Morrison, 36 years after it vanished. The sculpture was stolen in 1988 from Morrison’s grave at the famed Père-Lachaise cemetery.
Ironically, the bust turned up during a totally unrelated financial crime investigation. Paris police dropped the news on Instagram, but didn’t say if the statue will return to the grave.
The bust, made in 1981 by Croatian artist Mladen Mikulin, weighed about 300 pounds. It was placed at the site to mark the 10th anniversary of Morrison’s death.
Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, died in Paris in 1971 at only 27. His grave has since become a mecca for fans from around the world.
Over the years, the grave has been covered with flowers, graffiti, and beer bottles. Crowds still gather to celebrate his music and legacy.
Fans like tour guide Jade Jezzini believe returning the bust could draw even bigger crowds. But there’s still no word on whether that’ll actually happen.
