Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” has taken another leap forward in global recognition. The film has made it to the BAFTA Film Awards longlists in three categories: Best Director, Best Film Not in English Language, and Best Original Screenplay.
The British Academy announced its longlists on Friday, sparking excitement among fans of Indian cinema. Kapadia’s Malayalam-Hindi debut made history last year by winning the Grand Prix at Cannes, and it continues to collect accolades internationally.
“All We Imagine As Light” delves into the lives of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai, exploring themes of love, identity, and urban contradictions. It stars Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha in lead roles, with Chhaya Kadam in a critical supporting part.
Other Indian-origin talent also made waves on the longlists. Sandhya Suri’s police thriller “Santosh,” Karan Kandhari’s comedic drama “Sister Midnight,” and Dev Patel’s directorial debut “Monkey Man” all secured nominations in various categories. Patel also landed a mention in the Leading Actor longlist.
BAFTA’s longlisted films now move to the next voting stage, with final nominations set to be revealed on January 15. “All We Imagine As Light” has already garnered Golden Globe nods and international critics’ praise, adding to its momentum.
The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 16, and this year promises to be monumental for Indian representation on the global film stage. For fans of Indian cinema, there’s much to cheer about!
