Chandigarh’s Tree Walk: A Stroll Through Green History

MS Randhawa’s vision for Chandigarh still thrives in its lush green canopy. The man behind the city’s landscaping plan in 1955 ensured every tree had a purpose, making Chandigarh one of the most meticulously planned green cities in the world.

On a sunny Sunday morning, about 50 nature enthusiasts joined the Chandigarh Tree Lovers (CTL) for a special tree walk. The event began at Rose Garden, Sector 16, where Rainbow Eucalyptus trees set the perfect mood.

The walk, guided by CTL founders Rajnish Wattas and Harjit Singh, took participants through a collection of 1,600 rose species. Along the way, trees like Chota Kadam, Silver Oaks, and Bottle Brush sparked discussions and admiration.

A white-flowered tree became the highlight of the walk. After much debate, the group identified it as the Tabebuia Roseoalba. The discovery turned into a celebration, with many stopping to take selfies.

During the walk, people exchanged stories, discussed nature, and even poetry found its place. Surinder Kumar, a retired government employee, recited a poem, while ex-Indian Air Force personnel Manjit Singh Johal embraced a tall eucalyptus tree.

As the walk concluded with Verka milk and biscuits, new members pledged to continue exploring Chandigarh’s rich green heritage. What started as a simple morning stroll turned into a deep appreciation for nature’s wonders.
