Chandigarh Hosts Exhibition Honoring Architecture Icons

An exhibition celebrating legendary architects Le Corbusier and SD Sharma has opened at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh. Running until February 12, the event spotlights the remarkable six-decade career of 94-year-old SD Sharma, a close collaborator of Corbusier and Jeanneret.

The initiative is a joint effort by the Museum and the A3 Foundation, a group dedicated to art and architecture, founded by architect Sangeet Sharma. Adding to its significance, the event also marks three major milestones: SD Sharma’s 94th birthday, the A3 Foundation’s 75th event, and the Museum’s 50th anniversary.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Brigitte Bouvier, director of the Foundation Le Corbusier in Paris, alongside other architectural luminaries. Attendees included high-profile architects, dignitaries, and students, drawing admirers from across the globe.

Highlighting the event are 150 stunning wooden models of Corbusier’s designs, curated by Singaporean architect Rene Tan and his studio, RT+Q. These models, part of a globally acclaimed exhibition previously displayed in 22 countries, are being showcased in India for the first time.

A one-day conference accompanied the exhibition, with speakers like Rene Tan, Malaysian architect Lillian Tay, and SD Sharma himself. Talks explored topics like Chandigarh Modernism and its global impact on architecture.

“This exhibition reflects my gratitude to the masters who inspired me, Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret,” SD Sharma shared. His documented career, spread across 70 panels, also features his ongoing projects, aiming to inspire young architects with his enduring legacy.

From iconic designs to enriching discussions, this exhibition offers a significant tribute to architecture and innovation, making it a must-visit for design enthusiasts.
