Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025 Brings Theatre Extravaganza to Life

The National School of Drama’s (NSD) Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025 is here, and it’s bigger than ever. Tagged as the ‘Mahakumbh of Theatre’, the festival kicks off today in New Delhi at Kamani Auditorium, spanning 13 cities and even making stops in Colombo and Kathmandu, marking its first foray into foreign venues.

Over 200 productions from nine countries promise a whirlwind of drama and culture. Folk tales, contemporary theatre, classical pieces, and non-verbal expressions will light up the stage throughout the 20-day run. This isn’t just ‘one color, best color’—it’s a full bouquet of theatre.

This year, Bathinda in Punjab is a fresh addition to the route, with plays running from February 8 to 12. Director Chittaranjan Tripathy shared Bathinda was chosen to reach new audiences, expanding the festival’s footprint beyond its usual spots in Chandigarh and Amritsar. Local organization partners backed the idea enthusiastically.

Bathinda’s lineup opens with “Antim Raat,” a Hindi play featuring noted actor Rajendra Gupta. The plot delves into the life of Muhammad Ali Jinnah during the days before Partition, touching on his complex relationship with his daughter. Other highlights include “Abhijaan” in Bengali, capturing a turbulent Bengal, and “Phoenix Pokhi” in Assamese, scheduled for February 11. “Swapanlok,” inspired by a folktale, adds a whimsical touch.

Some may question the absence of Punjabi plays in the Bathinda lineup. Tripathy explained the aim is to introduce diverse regional and linguistic theatre to Punjabi audiences already well-versed in their own traditions. Punjabi is still celebrated, with plays like “Sohni Mahiwal” staged in New Delhi.

Beyond performances, the festival has something for everyone—masterclasses, literary discussions, and the innovative “Vishwa Jan Rang” featuring global connections through short plays inspired by Natyashastra. NSD alumnus and Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, the festival’s brand ambassador, expressed his excitement at these new initiatives.
