Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan believes South Indian cinema is winning because it focuses on strong emotions. He said Bollywood has forgotten this formula and tries to cater to a ‘finer’ audience.
Khan shared his thoughts at the ‘Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar’ event. Veteran writer Javed Akhtar asked him why South films are doing better than Hindi films in theatres.
Khan explained that Bollywood filmmakers choose subtle themes, while South films embrace powerful emotions like revenge. He pointed out that South directors understand mass appeal better.
He also noted that South cinema still thrives on single-screen theatres, while Bollywood mainly targets multiplex audiences. This shift has led to a disconnect with the larger movie-going public.
Multiplex culture made Bollywood believe that its audience was changing. As a result, filmmakers started making niche ‘multiplex films,’ while South films stuck to massy, high-energy storytelling.
Aamir Khan is currently working with Javed Akhtar on ‘Lahore 1947,’ starring Sunny Deol. The film is set to be his next big production.
