Mango Mania: Summer’s Sweetest Star Is Here!

Mango Mania: Summer’s Sweetest Star Is Here!

The king of fruits is back and it’s not just sweet—it’s different every time. From the juicy safeda to the sugary dashahari and tangy totapari, mangoes come in many avatars and flavors.

Between now and August, markets across India will be overflowing with varieties like langra, chausa, gadha and Amrapali. Each one has its own flavor punch, color and fan base. For many, the best memory is still a bucket-full of chusne wale aam during school vacations.

Mango also offers solid nutrition in each bite. A single bowl (165 gm) gives you 99 calories, 1.4 gm protein, 24.7 gm carbs and 67% of your daily vitamin C. It’s also packed with folate, vitamin A, copper and other key nutrients.

Diet experts say the mango’s bad rep among diabetics and weight-watchers is not always fair. Madhu Sharma, former PGI dietician, says mango is gut-friendly and fine for nearly everyone in moderation—about 100 gm a day, unless you’re already consuming other sweet fruits.

In India, over 1,500 mango types show up in meals—pickles, panna, shakes, and even curries. From aam ka achar in tiffins to Amul’s mango lassi, it’s a timeless summer essential now evolving with modern tastes.

For foodies, mango is more than just dessert. Chef Kishan Hari’s salad recipe with quinoa, mango, avocado and herbs brings a healthy twist on indulgence. Summer is short, mango season shorter—enjoy it while it lasts.
