Amritsar Actors Shine in Jallianwala Bagh Biopic

A new web series called ‘The Waking of a Nation’ is grabbing attention—and not just for its powerful story. Several actors from Amritsar have played key roles in this six-episode biopic that retells the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in a fresh, less-known light.

Directed by Ram Madhvani, known for hits like ‘Neerja’ and ‘Aarya’, the series is now streaming on Sony Liv. It features a strong local lineup including Kuldeep Singh, Sumeet Bharat, Pushp Bawa, and young talents like Prabhjot Singh Sangha.

Kuldeep Singh, 50, plays a Satyagrahi named Sachdhyan Singh. He’s an acting veteran who started in Kolkata and featured in Aparna Sen’s ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’. Despite a full-time job with the Airports Authority of India, he never gave up on his stage dreams.

Rising actor Prabhjot Singh Sangha, just 23 and a student at Khalsa College, plays Satyagrahi Salim. He’s already performed in big cities like Delhi and Chandigarh, showing strong potential.

Another young star is Sangeet Sharma, who plays a negative role. Meanwhile, actress Anmol is earning praise for her impactful performance.

The series throws a curveball at history books. It suggests the massacre wasn’t just General Dyer’s doing—it looks into deeper political motives and the role of British official Michael O’Dwyer, who was later assassinated by Udham Singh.

Overall, it’s a big moment for Amritsar’s theatre scene—and a gripping, thought-provoking watch for viewers.
